I never quite found sense in that phrase. I have friends high above and way below my standard, but we all enjoy spending time together.

I try to adjust my communication not to annoy anyone while still maintaining my own standards.

I always try to learn the most from both. And it reminds me of the Principle of Duality, which states that both extremes create the whole, and to find true balance, one has to understand both.

How can you be sure what is right if you do not understand the wrong? The wrong defines the right, and understanding both can help you find what is best for you.
