I think that it might prove to be more important to read and leave valuable comments. You can chose/affect the broader audience. And if your comments are good and valuable, you might also attract new followers.

Here on Medium, I found it interesting that some writers (who benefit from my many comments (that weren’t all linked)) forbid me to comment if I add links to my articles (on topic).
