Perhaps essentially we are not. But our skills to understand ourselves properly are. We mostly make conclusions of others based on our own experience.

How then can we understand the unknown, what we have not yet experienced?

A good practice example to try is the claim that there is no evil in the world, only ignorance. I am trying to wrap my mind around this one for some time now.
